Bouffant Tutorial and Style Me Vintage Review

Sunday, December 2, 2012

Earlier last month, I was sent a copy of the beautiful new book, Style Me Vintage: Step-by-Step Retro Look Book by Naomi Thompson, Belinda Hay and Katie Reynolds for review.

My love for fashion springs from my passion of history and this beautiful book ties both topics together by explaining the how and why of fashion-shaping historical events.  Each decade includes both day and evening shopping lists; covering fabrics, styles and details to look for.  Style me Vintage includes practical tips on:

* washing
* repairs
* dating vintage
* popular labels to look for

Style Me Vintage provides a general overview of styles from the 1920's to 1980's and is an excellent short guide in exploring vintage fashion and a must-read for anyone who has ever wanted to get into vintage but is unsure on where to start. It is also a very pretty coffee table book for those of us who have been collecting for a long time. The hard cover book is bound in a lovely fabric cover with vintage textile prints throughout the pages. Many of the models in the book include some our favorite UK vintage fashion bloggers! Naomi Thompson is a fantastic writer and avid vintage lover, which shines through in the way that she describes luxury fabrics, dripping 1920's jewels and a fab 40's print.

The hair and makeup sections provide a balanced mix of costumey styles and easy-to-achieve looks for daily wear. While some looks missed the mark for me, others, such as the amazing finger waves totally nailed it!  I was really excited to see the Jackie O Bouffant, which is a look I've been trying to replicate with my short hair. The publisher was kind enough to provide the Jackie O Bouffant tutorial for Va-Voom Vintage readers. Click to view larger image.

  1. What a lovely review and overview of this charming title. I received a copy this year, too (I won it from a blog contest), and really enjoyed it. Most of us long time vintage gals will be familiar with some of all of what it covers, but that didn't bother me at all, as I found the fashions shown so lovely and fun all the same, and would definitely give this title my nod of approval as well.
