Well, hot dog! I just have to brag a bit about my awesome fabric deal. We went to pick up some buttons and I found some gorgeous tiki print rayon fabric on sale for 70% off. I asked for 5 yards or the whole bolt if there was going to be a remnant. I hate to leave remnants behind because they have to deal with rolling it up, pricing it and all of that. So, the gal behind the cutting counter said "How 'bout you get 4 yards and then you can have the last two for half off the clearance price as a remnant and that remaining 7 inches....what seven inches? I'll just leave it on there for you." Wow, really?! So, I ran off with 6 yards 7 inches of this rayon challis for $15. Thank you, nice lady!
For years, I've wanted to make a tiki dress but haven't found the right fabric for the right price. Today was my lucky day! I'm going to make a dress, matching bolero and little dress for Olivia if I have enough extra. Here's some tiki inspiration........

I will probably draft the skirt on my own, but I'm checking out these patterns from
Mrs Depew for the top.
I've been sewing like crazy this week but when my
Wearing History sailor playsuit is finished, this will be my next project. What's on your sewing or craft table?
*Disclosure: Mrs. Depew is a sponsor of Va-Voom Vintage*
What an awesome deal, and thoroughly exciting project to put it to work on. I just know you're going to look gorgeous in these earthy, fun shades of brown and green, and can't wait to see your finished project.

Lovely fabric and a bargain to boot! The dress you plan to make is stunning, I look forward to seeing the finished garment. I'm currently making a dress from a 1940's Simplicity pattern which I hope to have finished next week :o)
ReplyDeleteIt is going to look fantastic, I cannot wait to see the result! Love the colours and the print.
ReplyDeleteYou lucky thing! Love the Couture Allure dress :) Nothing on the sewing table yet - but I have an event coming up in a couple of weeks, so I had better get my sew on!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely print- looks like it will drape well too- I wish I could find fabrics like that over here in the sticks! Looking forward to seeing the results :)
ReplyDeleteI've bought a new 30's pattern for a dress and I'm planning on making that up soon, but I have to finish my other million projects first!!!

What a steal! Can't wait to see the finished product.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute material. I don't think you can go wrong with a tiki style dress.
ReplyDeleteOoo, I love that beach bustier as a top option.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic deal on your fabric purchase [doesn't that just make for a thrilling shopping trip,ha]. Love the fabric and can't wait to see what you make?
ReplyDeleteI also love the play suit you are working on..
I just finished a wrap dress [just need to photograph it...tooo hot] And am now working on a simple sailor blouse.
Happy sewing.
Awesome deal! I can't wait to see what you come up with. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, you did score! The fabric is so cute—perfect for tiki! Can't wait to see what you come up with (especially now that I was SO excited by this that I've de-lurked).
ReplyDeleteAlso...a certain fabric store has done the same thing for me. It leaves me with such a warm, fuzzy feeling....Some of those cutting counter ladies are pretty fantastic.
Adorable fabric! I'm sure it will look great and be a wonderful addition to your summer wardrobe! Always great leaving a store feeling you got a little bit extra =)
ReplyDeleteI'm working on a dress with matching jacket I'll wear to a friends wedding in August. It's a fun project, but I'm starting to feel I gave myself a bit too-tight timeframe for it... Ah well, the dress I'll def finish, and then we'll see about the rest =)
LOVE that fabric and this idea! How awesome when things come together! I have a vintage set similar (but more plain) as that Wear It Again Sam one you shown. It's just a great, classic shape! I'm partial to the beach bustier top pattern, there's something about that little fold-over part above the bust that makes things look out of this world.
ReplyDeleteI just started a 40s collared blouse. The pattern has sort of light brown flowers and orange in it, and this post is making me think I should look for little coconut shell buttons for it! :D
I used a similar dress for my inspiration. I may make a bolero out of some left over fabric. Check it out: http://kittenscloset55.blogspot.com/2012/06/i-must-say-after-much-fighting-with.html
ReplyDeleteI love that fabric it's fantastic!!
