St Louis Spring Fling in the City 2015

5/14/15
It's been very quiet around here lately because I've been crafting like a mad woman for the past few weeks. My great grandma had a thimble that was so worn, it had holes in it and I thought "how does that even happen?" Now I know.

I've been making brooches, collars, tote bags, makeup bags, hair scarves and art prints for my first craft show, the Spring Fling in the City hosted by Parsimonia Vintage. I'm really excited about my new tote bags, which I sewed myself since I couldn't find anything that was just right.

My friend, Erin from Yellow Bird Gifts kindly let me share a booth space with her so I could get the swing of things before doing one on my own.

It rained on Saturday but the event organizers had a plan B and set the vendors up indoors. We enjoyed live music from local bands, dancing from the St Louis Lindy Hop group and treats from local food trucks. We were set up right next to our friend, Beqi of Beqi clothing.

I bumped into some ladies from the St. Louis Vintage Enthusiasts Meet-up Group, met some internet friends in person (yay!) and made some new friends!

I made a lot of new things for the Spring Fling, which are now available from Wacky Tuna! If you weren't able to join us here in St Louis,  use coupon "springfling2015" for 20% off your order in my etsy shop now till June 1st!

Giveaway: Tour New York's Garment District

5/4/15

Today I have a giveaway from Seek New York for two tour passes to the New York Garment District.

I'm a mid-western girl who has lived in the same city for my whole life but I love to get out and see the world beyond the St. Louis arch. My first big city trip was to Chicago last fall and although it was fun running around town, exploring, I wish we knew where to find those hidden treasures in the heart of the city.

Seek New York provides shopping tours, styling services, personal shopping and guided tours throughout New York's historic garment district. Get a peek at fashion landmarks, the history of area design schools,  and learn the history of the garment industry in the Big Apple. The two-hour walking tour also makes several stops in fabric and trim shops so you can pick up some supplies for your next fashion design project, shopping at the same spots as some of New York's up and coming fashion designers.  Tour participants get exclusive discounts at area fabric stores, trim stores and restaurants.

Today I'm giving away two passes to the Seek New York public garment district tour.

Public garment district tours are held mostly on Thursday and Saturday with a maximum of 10 people.  The giveaway winner can choose the tour date that will work best with their visit dates.

Make a Simple Pillbox Hat

5/1/15

how to make an easy vintage pillbox hat with Va-Voom Vintage

This tutorial for a very simple vintage hat originally appeared on The Vintage Post, which isn't around anymore but I was able to find the steps to share with you here! No expensive millinery supplies here, just some craft felt and very basic sewing skills!

Before I loved vintage clothes, I started collecting hats. I love crazy hats. They’re so unique and its an easy way to incorporate a little vintage in a modern wardrobe.
It wasn’t long before I started wanting to make a few of my own hats but millinery can be a very expensive hobby and supplies usually have to be mail-ordered.
Today I’ll show you how to make a very simple vintage style pillbox hat using craft felt. You can embellish this hat with millinery veil, flowers, little birds, ribbon- the sky is the limit!
You will need:
Craft felt by-the-yard cut in to a strip 26 inches long by 5 inches wide  and a circle cut 8 inches in diameter
scissors
thread
pins

Pin the crown to the band, matching up the edges.

Using the presser foot edge as a guide, stitch all the way around the hat

When you reach the end, stitch the band edges together, trimming the excess.

Line the crown seam up with the edge of the presser foot, using it as a guide and stitch a decorative line all the way around the band

Turn the hat inside out and fold the band in half. Overlap the edge of the band with the raw edge of the seam and pin in place

Use small invisible hand stitches to tack the band in place

Turn the hat right side out and align the edge of the presser foot with the edge of the band. Sew a decorative line of stitching

Press the hat and decorate as you like or leave it plain! If you’re looking for millinery supplies to decorate your felt hats, you can find wonderful vintage millinery fruit, flowers, feathers and veil on etsy and ebay.
Some fabric stores carry modern millinery netting and tulle. You can also check out millinery supply sites like Judith M or Hatters Millinery Supplies
