8 Vintage Style Lingerie and Accessories for $30 or less

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

Some of you may remember my 10 vintage style winter shoes under $50 post  (and the UK version) from last year with gorgeous affordable vintage style shoes from Amerimark. Well, the other day I stumbled upon another fantastic mail order catalog that I wanted to share- National

I am absolutely crazy about these old lady mail order catalogs. I get so excited when I get mine in the mail and they usually have some deal on shipping when your purchase a certain amount and they always have a sales section. Although National doesn't have a pretty selection of shoes like Amerimark, they have way more options for vintage style undies, basic tops and accessories.

The exquisite form bra, pictured here is my favorite vintage style bra. It's wire free, built for a fuller cup size and so comfortable. They're also dyeable so you can have a prettier selection of unmentionables. I'm loving the cheap girdles and garter belts too. I have several vintage ones but with age, the elastic and power net starts to wear so I try to reserve them for extra special occasions only. These are brand new, so you don't have to deal with the whole wearing someone's old underwear aspect, you can be sure it's available in your size and a girdle under $30? Yes, please!!

  1. Thank you for this! I've been wanting some vintage-inspired intimates (modern-day underthings don't always look or feel "right" under vintage clothes, you know?) but can never seem to find anything that I like or for a decent price.

PS: I've been reading your blog for several months now, even though this is my first comment. (I found you when I was searching for pin curl tutorials.) Love your site and magazine!

  5. Hooray! Thanks so much for the tip. I've been looking for a good cheap girdle for ages.

While we're talking vintage-ish good quality bargain lingerie, Lauren Silva carries the BEST long-line backless/strapless bra EVER(Dominque style 6377) and it's only $40. Here's a link.

I wear mine ALL the time with off the shoulder tops and halter/strapless dresses and I love it! It provides boob-lift and waist-shaping and it's actually comfortable!

  6. Awesome! Thank you for this info - I'm totally going to be getting one of those bras. I have a vintage one, and I love it, but it's itchy as all else.

    1. Well I hate to say it, but I ordered the bra, and it was really disappointing. It's not cotton, but some sort of weird nylon stuff. It was WAY big in the band an cups for a 34B. The shape seemed right, but there wasn't any padding or structure to the cups, and I didn't fill them out, so I don't know if it does create that nice conical look of decades past. I'm pretty bummed, but at least it was cheap. Oh well :-(

    2. Really?! I'm sorry you didn't like it! I wear them almost daily and love them but I think they're meant for cups that are usually too full for regular bras. I wear them because they don't have any padding or wire because my boobs are like...ridiculous in size so they give me a lot of shape and support and the elastic stuff at the top keeps anything from spilling out the top. I ordered several when I was pregnant because I had planned on converting them to nursing bras but I ordered sizes that were too big in the cup. I was really bummed out because it was such a waste so I put a dart in the sides and now they're perfect! Maybe you could put a dart in it and it might help the fullness issue and fit a little better? I wonder if they changed the fabric on them recently? Mine are 100% cotton. Nylon sounds dreadful for a bra, especially in the summer *blargh!*

  11. I love that bra! I have never heard of this company, will definitely have to go check them out. I have a couple girdles like these, cant really remember where I got them but they were similarly priced. I also have several garter belts that I got from Secrets In Lace. They are pricey but very nice quality.

  12. I would love to have that bra! My underwire just broke in one of mine. I hate them. But, I have had a terrible time finding anything with out the wire these days.

  13. Great selection - those pieces really do have a wonderful mid-century vibe to them. I just checked and National doesn't ship their catalog or merchandise outside of the States, shucks! - and that $20 blouse was so calling my name (and making my wallet happy about the pricetag). I'll bookmark them and check back every now and then all the same though. It doesn't happen every day, but sometimes US sites do suddenly decide to start shipping to Canada.

  14. *sigh* Oh how I wish companies would make true vintage style bras in cup sizes beyond a DD... I keep hoping Rago will, but they've said they don't have plans to expand.

  16. I have a question...and feel like a dork for asking, but I really am curious! For those 2 beautiful girdles that are $22, I have always wondered, how do you go to the bathroom while wearing it? It appears to me you have to practically undress to use the restroom! I have always wanted to get one...but I drink a lot of water everyday and this would pose a real problem! :)

    1. Oh no, that's a perfectly valid question! Ladies would wear panties under the girdle, then the girdle and stockings over the top, often followed by a slip and dress. So, if you're in a big hurry, you'd lift your slip and dress as usual and pull your panties down as far as you can so they'd sit around the top of your stockings and you may need to pull the girdle up a little so you're not sitting on it. Another option would be to pull the girdle down with your panties and pull it up again when you're finished so you wouldn't have to fumble with stockings and garter clips, which is what I usually do when I wear a girdle. I suppose some ladies may also detach the back garter clips so they can pull the girdle up when they sit and then replace the garter clips when they're done. I imagine that if you wear a girdle every day, you get really good at messing with the clips! :p
