Friday Fashionistas: Carmen Miranda

how to dress like Carmen Miranda and get her quirky vintage style

Pj has started his annual two week vacation today and since he's home, my schedule is off and I had no idea that today was Friday until now! Oops, time for my Friday Fashionita.  This week's stylish lady is Carmen Miranda, the singer, dancer and actress with the best shoe collection in the land!

Born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha on February 9, 1909

Named "Carmen" by her father due to his love of opera, which influenced her singing from an early age

In the 40's and 50's, she was called "The Brazillian Bombshell"

The Brazilain people criticized her for giving the rest of the world a false image of thier culture.

In 1939, Saks Fifth Avenue released turbans and jewelry inspired by Carmen Miranda

Fruity jewelry, still popular today is often called "Carmen Miranda jewelry"

For more on Carmen, check out the documentary; Carmen Miranda: Bananas is My Business or a biography book Brazillian Bombshell also see some of her beautiful  hats, jewelry and shoes at The Carmen Miranda Museum

  1. Oooh! I'm so glad you did Carmen, I absolutely adore her! And I'm also SUPER pleased that you used a picture from the "Lady in the tuti-fruity-hat" number from The Gang's All Here. I love the fashionista posts, keep 'em coming!

  2. Ohhh, I am most certainly going to check out that documentary! I'm smitten with Carmen too, she's one of my absolute favorites. I love how even when dressed in "normal" street clothes, she had such panache and vibrancy; I so admire that gorgeous forward roll she often sported!

  3. Love this woman...she was outrageous, unabashed and just plain fun. A true bombshell with a rockin body and wit.

  4. This week has been an absolute whirlwind for us, too, and my schedule feels completely off as well (on Tuesday it felt like Friday, now it's Friday night and I really haven't a clue what day of the week it feels like...maybe Wednesday?).

Love this delightfully fun post - Carmen is the perfect vintage celeb to highlight as we tumbled ever further into the sweltering, sultry, energetic season that is summer.

Oodles of hugs & joyful weekend wishes,
    ♥ Jessica

  5. I would have to say Carmen Miranda is one of my favorite starlets. She reminds me of my Great Grandmother from Spain, I have her photo at the top of my blog. She actually would compete in those dance contests that lasted for days!

  6. I love every film that she was in! Oh she was a fun lady to watch and I LOVE her style!

I read every single comment (even on old posts) and they make my day! If you have a question, please email me at Thank you for reading me!
